The pop-rock singer opened up about her romantic history on 'The Howard Stern Show'

Demi Lovato released the razor-sharp rock song about age-gap relationships “29” in 2022, and now she's opening up their past experiences with them.

On an episode of SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, which aired on Monday, the pop-rock artist, 31, spoke about how positive their current relationship with musician Jutes has been and how it’s offered them perspective on their past romances.

“I think what I went through was I had a phase of dating older men and dating older guys because of my daddy issues, obviously,” the superstar (who uses she/they pronouns) told Stern, 69. “Now I’m at a place where I’m in an amazing relationship. My boyfriend is a year older than me, and we’re growing together and it feels so healthy.”

“I can say with confidence that my daddy issues aren’t anything that are inside of me anymore,” the former Disney Channel star added. “I think there’s a few signs to that. I’m with a partner that is my age, essentially. I look back on the past [of dating older men] and think, ‘That’s gross.’”

She also explained what works so well with their current partner, 32. “He has the best personality. We laugh non-stop,” the “Cool For the Summer” artist said. “There’s this partnership there that is just so magnetic, and the way that we laugh together — it’s just nonstop. So I think if you can find someone that makes you feel safe, that you’re so attracted to, that you laugh with constantly, that’s the formula of a really great relationship.”

The pop-punk singer also revealed they “know” the Canadian artist (whose real name is Jordan Lutes) is “the one” and have even discussed getting married and having children. “We’ve talked about it,” Lovato shared. “It’s been about a year and a half, so we’re taking our time with it a little bit, you know? I think it’s important not to rush that.”

Lovato and Jutes met while working on a session for their 2022 ablum HOLY FVCK and officially became a couple after several months of being friends in August 2022. PEOPLE confirmed the two were in a romantic relationship, with a source revealing, "It's a really happy and healthy relationship. He's a super great guy."

The recording artist, who is gearing up to release rerecorded, rock versions of their hits on the REVAMPED album, recently spoke about the moment they met Jutes. In an interview with the PodcastOne podcast LadyGang, they said, “He came into the session and I literally was like, ‘Who is this guy?’ I texted my friends and was like, ‘Oh my God, the hottest guy just walked In. I am so nervous. I don’t know what to do with myself.’”

“He was just so focused on the music,” the rocker continued. “So we were friends for a while and then told each other how we felt.”

Jutes is Lovato’s first public relationship since calling off their engagement to actor Max Ehrich in September 2020. The singer and star of The Young and the Restless, 32, were together for approximately six months and engaged for two before splitting.

Prior to Ehrich, the recording artist had several brief flings and famously dated Wilmer Valderrama for six years.

The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer reflected on their relationship with the actor, 43, in the 2017 documentary Simply Complicated.  "I met him on Jan. 11, 2010," they recalled. "I thought, 'I have to have him,' but I was only 17 and he was like, 'Get away from me.’ When I turned 18 we started dating. I think it was love at first sight, we connected on a level that I've never connected with anybody before, he was just my rock, my everything."
