Demi Lovato Hits 2023 MTV VMAs Red Carpet in Edgy, All-Black Ensemble Ahead of Her Performance

The 14-time VMA nominee is set to perform at the ceremony, where she received two nominations for her song "Swine"

Demi Lovato brought their signature edgy style to the VMAs.

The singer, 31, (who uses she/they pronouns) has been inspiring awe at award shows since their Disney star days, and the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards were no different.

Lovato took their rocker aesthetic to the next level on the VMAs pink carpet in a bold, all-black look. The singer layered a mesh and leather mini dress under the focal point of the outfit: a floor-length leather jacket complete with pointed, oversized shoulders.

For jewels, Lovato went all out, wearing Ofira Jewels 18k gold, black and white diamond pyramid earrings, Ofira Jewels 18k white gold, black, white and champagne diamond cluster bands, Ofira Jewels 18k white gold, white diamond cluster band, a Lorraine Schwartz lighting bolt ring and a Lorraine Schwartz black diamond wrap around ring.

The coat's exaggerated silhouette is slightly reminiscent of the cover art look for her upcoming album, Revamped.

The 14-time VMA nominee accessorized the edgy ensemble with silver diamond drop earrings, chunky rings, a bold, smokey eyeshadow look and a nude glossy lip, and they wore their hair back in a slick style, bringing just one strand to the front.

Lovato is set to perform later in the ceremony, her first time singing at the VMAs in six years.

The "La La Land" singer is also up for two Moon Person awards this year. In best pop, the “Confident” rocker received a nod for their song "Swine,” and will face off with Rodrigo, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Miley Cyrus, Pink and Taylor Swift.

The Holy Fvck musician is also up for the video for good award for “Swine,” which she released on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to end the constitutional right to abortion. Profits from the pro-choice anthem are donated to the Reproductive Justice Fund at the Demi Lovato Foundation.

The category, originally called “best video with a message,” earned Lovato their only VMA for "Skyscraper" in 2014.

This year, the “Heart Attack” singer has some steep competition: Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain't Got You (Orchestral),” Bad Bunny’s “El Apagón - Aquí Vive Gente,” Dove Cameron’s "Breakfast,” Imagine Dragons’ "Crushed” and Maluma’s "La Reina."

In addition to Lovato, main show performers at the 2023 VMAs will include host Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Lil Wayne, Måneskin, Stray Kids, Tomorrow x Together with Anitta, Fall Out Boy, Peso Pluma and Metro Boomin with Future, A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, Swae Lee and NAV.

Global icon award recipient Sean “Diddy” Combs and video vanguard award recipient Shakira will also perform, and Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are set to debut their new song "Bongos" live at the ceremony.

The 2023 MTV VMAs are airing live from The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Tuesday, Sept. 12 on CBS and BET, BET Her, VH1, Comedy Central, CMT, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Nickelodeon and Paramount Network. Viewers can also catch the show through an MTV.com live stream or on Paramount+.
