Debra Messing Gets Trump’s Attention on Twitter, Demands End to Gun Violence

As one of the largest hurricanes ever recorded hit the Bahamas and Texas was struck by another mass shooting, Sunday morning Donald Trump was on Twitter talking smack about “Will & Grace” star Debra Messing, who had called for a list of donors attending the president’s upcoming Beverly Hills fundraiser.

“I have not forgotten that when it was announced that I was going to do ‘The Apprentice,’ and when it then became a big hit, helping NBC’s failed lineup greatly, @DebraMessing came up to me at an Upfront & profusely thanked me, even calling me ‘Sir,'” Trump said on Twitter. “How times have changed!”

The fundraiser that instigated the whole thing is reportedly being held on Sept. 17, five days before the Emmys are held in Los Angeles, with a minimum $1,000 donation required to attend. Messing called for a list of all attendees to be published, saying that “the public has a right to know.”

In response to the president’s “How times have changed!” tweet, Messing tweeted, “Now that I have your attention…” with a retweet of a partial list of the major shootings that have occurred in the U.S., including the Las Vegas attack that killed 59 people in 2017 and the Orlando nightclub shooting that killed 50 in 2016. She also criticized Trump for not paying due attention to Hurricane Dorian and the shooting in Odessa, Texas that killed five people on Saturday.

“America wants universal background checks. The majority of Americans want assault weapons ban,” she tweeted. “Take Action and I’ll call you Sir.”

Trump’s tweet also drew criticism from Republicans, among them is former congressman and radio host Joe Walsh, who announced a primary campaign against Trump this past week.

“This is why Donald Trump will lose in 2020: Everyday, he uses the power of his office to target & attack private citizens,” Walsh tweeted. “This morning, it’s Debra Messing. It’s wrong. And the American people are sick & tired of this daily childish abuse of power.”
