Fresh off guest-hosting “The View” last week, Deborah Roberts has been announced as the new co-anchor of “20/20.”

ABC News president Kim Godwin said Tuesday that the multiple Emmy and Peabody Award winner will join David Muir as a permanent co-anchor on the long-running newsmagazine series, which will return for a 46th season Friday.

“I’m thrilled to announce that Deborah Roberts will be elevating her role to co-anchor of “20/20,” after her elevation to contributing anchor of the program one year ago,” Godwin said in a statement.

Sharing the news on social media, Roberts wrote: “I’m honored and humbled to step into a new role as co-anchor at ’20/20,’ alongside my colleague David Muir. Following in the footsteps of Barbara Walters is an honor.”

Roberts replaces Amy Robach, who exited the network in January following a controversial affair with her “GMA3” co-host T.J. Holmes.

Roberts, who’s married to “Today” weather anchor Al Roker, has been reporting for “20/20,” since 1995. Recruited by Walters — a correspondent, producer and co-host on “20/20” from 1979-2004 — she has gained recognition as a skilled investigative journalist covering political figures, world events, crime cases and newsmakers.

Throughout her near 30-year career at ABC News, Roberts has worked for “Nightline,” “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight with David Muir.” The New York Times bestselling author has also served as a substitute anchor on “The View.”

“Deborah Roberts is one of a kind — a first-class journalist who brings heart, authority and integrity to every story she covers,” Godwin added. “Along with David Muir, she embodies the DNA of ’20/20,’ inspiring the team and people around the world with every thoughtful word, inspiring report and impactful review.”
