Deadline Contenders Film Streaming Site Launches

Deadline on Monday launched its streaming site for Contenders Film, featuring all panels from the ambitious two-day virtual awards-season event that took place over the weekend. The annual kickoff highlighting movies in the conversation for kudos put the spotlight on 49 films from 16 distributors, streamers and studios.

The launch of the video site follows those for the first two Contenders events of 2021 which were new to the party this year: Contenders International and Contenders Documentary.

This weekend, A24, Amazon Studios, Apple, Bleecker Street, DreamWorks Animation, Focus Features, Gravitas Ventures, Hulu, Kino Lorber, Neon, Netflix, Sony Pictures Classics, STX Entertainment, Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros took part in the virtual gala, which featured panel Q&As along with clips from the films being talked about this awards season.

The lineup of more than 150 participants included Gal Gadot & Patty Jenkins, George Clooney, the Russo Brothers, Viola Davis, Sacha Baron Cohen & Maria Bakalova, Anthony Hopkins, Rachel Brosnahan, Pete Davidson, Elisabeth Moss, Michelle Pfeiffer, Casey Affleck, Jodie Foster, Gary Oldman, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jared Leto, Andy Samberg, Steven Yeun, Daniel Kaluuya, Riz Ahmed, James Corden, Stanley Tucci and Justin Timberlake, among many others.

On January 9, Deadline kicked off its run with the inaugural Contenders International, which featured 22 movies from 15 studios, streamers and distributors. In all, 20 films are official submissions to the Best International Film category at the 93rd Academy Awards, repping countries including Serbia, Greece, Colombia, Switzerland, Chile, Hungary, Finland, Poland, Romania, France, Georgia, Russia, Ivory Coast, Italy, Mexico, Denmark, Slovakia, Indonesia, Guatemala and India.

Panelists included Sophia Loren, Edoardo Ponti, Nina Hoss, Andrei Konchalovsky, Philippe Lacôte, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Vinterberg, Javier Cámara, Fernando Trueba and Alexander Nanau among others.

On January 10, Contenders Documentary showed off 23 movies from 12 studios in a season where nonfiction fare was not held back by the pandemic; the record for films in contention for the Best Documentary Oscar certainly will be shattered. Panelists who joined us included Oscar-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmakers Alex Gibney, Liz Garbus, Ron Howard, Bryan Fogel, Errol Morris, Gianfranco Rosi, Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick.
