Deadline’s The Contenders Emmys Video: How ‘The Voice’ Thrives Even After ‘American Idol’s’ Demise
Warner Horizon Television’s reliable juggernaut The Voice is one of the few reality competition shows that has managed to stand up to Emmy’s perennial winner The Amazing Race. It has actually snatched the statuette twice — something no show other than Race has managed
since the inception of the category. And as a consistent top 10 show, it is still standing even after the Godfather of the singing competition genre, American Idol, has gone off the air.
As part of Warner Bros TV’s presentation for Deadline’s first-ever The Contenders Emmys event last month at the DGA Theatre, the studio showcased the secret of the show’s ongoing success for the packed crowd full of TV Academy voting members. Warner Bros President of Unscripted and Alternative Television Mike Darnell points out in our conversation that he was actually still at Fox overseeing American Idol at the time The Voice came on the air, and he admits it was the beginning of the demise of Idol since it had such a unique twist on the concept. Executive Producer Audrey Morrissey talks about the origins of the series (it came from Holland originally), the chemistry among the coaches, and how they keep it all fresh over the course of 90 hours a year.
