DC is Celebrating Batman Day by Lighting Up World Cities With the Bat Signal
Detective Comics #27 made its debut in May of 1939 and would go on to become one of the most valuable titles in the history of comics, thanks to the fact that it introduced Batman to the world. So while the third Saturday of September isn’t really the anniversary of the Caped Crusader’s debut, it is the day that DC has chosen to celebrate one of its most iconic creations. And to mark the eightieth anniversary of Batman's birth this September 21st, fans in 13 metropolises around the world will have the chance to see the bat signal light up their cities in real life.
CNN reports that at 8 p.m. local time, folks in Melbourne, Tokyo, Johannesburg, Berlin, Rome, Paris, Barcelona, London, São Paulo, New York, Montreal, Mexico City, and Los Angeles will be able to spot the signal projected onto local landmarks, including L.A.’s City Hall, New York’s Domino Sugar Refinery, and London’s Senate House.
And those aren’t the only bat-themed events taking place Saturday—Batman Day includes a host of other celebrations in cities around the country. There’s a nighttime fun run in L.A., limited-time pop-up shops in San Francisco, L.A., Las Vegas, and Chicago, and a panel discussion with Batman writers Scott Snyder, Peter J. Tomasi, Brad Walker, and James Tynion IV in New York. DC will also be giving out free editions of two comics: The Batman Who Laughs and Batman: Nightwalker.
