Daytime Emmys: ‘The Young and the Restless’ Leads 2022 Nominations

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced the nominees for the 2022 Daytime Emmy Awards, set to air on CBS on June 24 and stream on Paramount+.
Three nominees for outstanding drama series lead the nominations: CBS’ The Young and the Restless with 18 nods, ABC’s General Hospital with 17 and NBC’s Days of Our Lives with 11. Peacock’s Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem and CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful were also nominated in the category, which includes five nominated series for the first time since 2014. Days of Our Lives and Beyond Salem are the first series and spinoff, respectively, to be nominated together.

Syndicated talk shows The Kelly Clarkson Show and The Drew Barrymore Show also garnered multiple noms, with nine for Clarkson and six for Barrymore, with both eponymous hosts nominated for outstanding entertainment talk show host.
ABC’s The View earned nine nominations. Facebook Watch’s Red Table Talk earned four noms, and its Estefans-hosted spinoff earned three.
The two series in the Red Table Talk franchise are among the six nominees in the outstanding informative talk show category, alongside ABC’s GMA3: What You Need to Know, Disney+’s Turning the Tables With Robin Roberts, Facebook Watch’s Peace of Mind With Taraji and the syndicated Tamron Hall — all of which feature people of color as hosts. Hall, Taraji P. Henson and Robin Roberts also earned noms for outstanding informational talk show host, as did Gloria Estefan, Emily Estefan and Lili Estefan and The View’s Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro and Meghan McCain.
Two Black performers were nominated in lead acting categories, a first since 2012: Mishael Morgan from The Young and the Restless and James Reynolds from Days of Our Lives, the latter having appeared on the soap since 1981.
Other noteworthy nominations include the first Daytime Emmy nod for Beyoncé for the theme song to Facebook Watch’s Talks With Mama Tina. PBS’ This Old House earned its 100th nomination and will become the third series, following 60 Minutes and Sesame Street, to receive a lifetime achievement honor.
MasterClass’ Issa Rae Teaches Creating Outside the Lines and Ringo Starr Teaches Drumming & Creative Collaboration earned the educational streaming platform its first Daytime Emmy noms. Discovery+ and IMDb TV (recently rebranded as “Amazon Freevee”) also earned their first noms.
In addition, The Hollywood Reporter and Lifetime landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for their special Lifetime and The Hollywood Reporter Present Women in Entertainment: The Next Generation. The special, which aired on Lifetime in May 2021, is up for best arts and popular culture program.
The program, tied to THR’s annual Women in Entertainment Power 100 list, was hosted by Padma Lakshmi and featured appearances from Elizabeth Olsen, Kathryn Hahn, Jurnee Smollett, Gillian Anderson, Emma Corrin, Lana Condor, Anitta and Anna Kendrick, as well as a performance from Girls5eva star Sara Bareilles. The special highlighted THR’s pioneering Women in Entertainment Mentorship Program, which, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, grants $1 million in scholarships to L.A. high school seniors from underserved communities. This marks the fourth Daytime Emmy nom for THR, which received three prior nominations for its roundtable series, Close Up With The Hollywood Reporter.
This year’s awards ceremony will be the first following the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which is behind the Daytime Emmys, and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which is behind the Primetime Emmys, jointly announcing in December 2021 a shift to genre-based awards rather than time-based awards as part of an effort to ensure the competitions’ continued relevance. Previously, the Daytime Emmys were presented to individuals and programs broadcast between 2 a.m. and 6 p.m. and certain categories of digital and syndicated programming of similar content.
The 49th annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be presented live at 9 p.m. ET (replay at 9 p.m. PT) on June 24 on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
The Creative Arts and Lifestyle Emmy ceremony will stream live at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on June 18 at Watch.TheEmmys.tv and via The Emmys apps for iOS, tvOS, Android, FireTV and Roku (full list at Apps.TheEmmys.tv). The final determination of categories presented on the CBS broadcast and during the Creative Arts ceremony will be announced closer to the respective ceremony dates.
