Daytime Emmys Still in Limbo, as NATAS Announces December Dates for Children’s & Family Emmys, Other Ceremonies
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is planning a mega Emmy weekend in December — although it remains to be seen whether the Daytime Emmys will be a part of the festivities. The org has firmed up dates for the Daytime Creative Arts & Lifestyle Emmys, the 2nd Annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards and Trustees’ Gala and the Children’s & Family Creative Arts Emmys, all of which will take place the weekend of December 16 and 17.
Meanwhile, there’s no word yet on when the flagship Daytime Emmys ceremony — which had been scheduled to air on CBS in June — might take place. CBS and NATAS didn’t have further information on when the event might take place; NATAS only noted in its release that “information regarding additional Daytime Emmy Award ceremonies may be announced.”

Technically, despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, the Daytime Emmys are free and clear to move forward, because it falls under the non-struck SAG-AFTRA Network Code deal (as do the soap operas, talk shows and judge series being honored during the ceremony). But because it’s unclear whether talent would feel comfortable participating, NATAS and CBS are likely waiting for a resolution before firming up their Daytime Emmy plans. (Of course, it would make sense that should there be an end to the strike in the next few weeks, the Daytime Emmys could join that December weekend of NATAS ceremonies.)

None of the other ceremonies that have now been confirmed for December are televised, which may make those easier to announce. NATAS has essentially booked space at downtown Los Angeles’ Westin Bonaventure Hotel the entire weekend for these events:

Saturday, Dec. 16, 12 p.m. PT: Daytime Creative Arts & Lifestyle Emmy Awards Luncheon
Saturday, Dec. 16, 8 p.m. PT: Children’s & Family Creative Arts Emmy Awards Dinner
Sunday, Dec. 17, 5 p.m. PT: Children’s & Family Emmy Awards and Trustees’ Gala
“We are pleased to honor once again the writers, performers and other creators that inspire and entertain audiences of all ages,” said Adam Sharp, president and CEO, NATAS. “We look forward to a fun-packed weekend that underscores the amazing scope of content making a difference in viewers’ lives.”
As part of the announcement, NATAS said that talk show veteran Maury Povich, who has already been named this year’s Daytime Emmys lifetime achievement honoree, will be handed his award at the Saturday afternoon Daytime Creative Arts event.
This year’s main Daytime Emmys telecast was originally set to air live June 16 on CBS and Paramount+. It’s part of a new two-year telecast deal that the academy had set with CBS. (The Daytime Emmys Lifestyle & Creative Arts Ceremony were supposed to take place the next day, on June 17.) Those dates were postponed after the WGA strike got under way.
Per a NATAS disclaimer: “SAG-AFTRA members appearing on daytime dramas, talk shows and other non-dramatic programs recognized by the Daytime Emmy Awards work under the guild’s Network Code agreement, which remains a non-struck contract. The majority of programs recognized in the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards competition were similarly produced under agreements not subject to the strike.
“However, some Children’s & Family Emmy-nominated programs remain struck. NATAS salutes the nominated performances of those SAG-AFTRA members who appeared in these programs but acknowledges that it is a violation of the guild’s strike rules for such members to promote or publicize their nominations for struck work.
“SAG-AFTRA members are strongly advised to observe the strike rules at all times. NATAS remains hopeful that a fair deal will be reached prior to the awards ceremonies. The events themselves are produced under separate non-dramatic agreements that are not subject to the strike order. NATAS will modify ceremony formats as needed to respect any remaining strike obligations of guild members.”
