David Wright takes swings during surprising Mets batting practice appearance

It’s been over two years since New York Mets third baseman David Wright appeared in the majors. Wright has attempted to return from various injuries multiple times, only to have setbacks halt his progress.

The 35-year-old third baseman gave Mets fans hope that maybe things will be different this time around. On Monday, Wright surprised everyone by taking some hacks during batting practice at Citi Field.

Don’t believe it, that’s OK. You can see it with your own eyes. SportsNet New York has video of a few of Wright’s swings.

How did David Wright look during batting practice with the Mets?

It was only a 30 second video, but Wright looked fine taking some hacks at the plate. While the camera angle doesn’t show where the balls were going, the sound off his bat sounded pretty good.

What does this mean for David Wright’s rehab?

The fact that Wright has been cleared to swing is encouraging. After Wright was seen throwing in May, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Wright would progress to baseball activities soon.

What does this mean for David Wright moving forward?

We only got a short clip of Wright at the plate, so it’s best to proceed with caution here. There’s still a lot we don’t know about what he’s able to do right now. And given his recent history with setbacks, it would be unwise to get your hopes up about him getting back to the majors any time soon.

Still, this is a step in the right direction. Given all that Wright has been through the past couple seasons, it would be a great story if he was able to make it back to the Mets.
