'Jessica Jones': David Tennant is Ready for His Close-Up in New Trailer

After a series of inventive teaser trailers kept her face out of the frame, viewers finally got their first full look at Netflix’s latest Marvel hero, Jessica Jones (played by Krysten Ritter), in a full-length trailer that premiered online at the end of October. Now, we finally get the chance to meet her nemesis. The latest trailer brings the man that destroyed Jessica’s life — Kilgrave a.k.a. The Purple Man (David Tennant) — out of the shadows and into the light.

How’d he do it? Via mind control, a power that he’s more than happy to demonstrate on any willing (but mostly unwilling) victim. As the series begins, he’s already used, abused and abandoned Jessica’s mind and body, leaving her bitter and battered, but not entirely broken. Now, he’s moved on to new targets, but she’s not about to let him commit the same crime twice. With the help of strapping bar owner Luke Cage (Mike Colter), not to mention her own enhanced abilities (super-strength and flight), she takes the fight directly to her victimizer.

The role of Kilgrave promises to be a major departure for Tennant, still best known (and adored) for playing Doctor Who’s Tenth Doctor — arguably the most popular Doctor, and certainly the cuddliest. But the English actor knows how to channel his dark side; during a recent interview on a U.K. radio show, Tennant reeled off classic lines of dialogue from some of the all-time great bad guys from film and television, including Mr. Burns, Hannibal Lecter and Darth Vader. That performance is preserved in the above video and suggests that we should be afraid — very afraid — of Tennant’s dark side.

Jessica Jones premieres Nov. 20 on Netflix.
