David Lynch’s Coffee and Other Movie Brews

It’s well known that David Lynch enjoys a damn fine cup of coffee, but the man is serious about his commitment to caffeine: He’s even got his own coffee line.

It makes sense that the filmmaker wouldn’t go the standard celebrity beverage route with a liquor brand — this is a man so serious about coffee that he remembers his first cup at the tender age of three. That’s why he teamed up with Allegro Coffee to create David Lynch Signature Cup Coffee, which comes in both a House and an Espresso blend.

“For me, it’s the flavor. It should have no bitterness, and it should be smooth and rich in flavor,” Lynch said in a 2014 interview discussing his foray into coffee roasting. “I like to drink espresso with milk, like a latte or a cappuccino, but the espresso should have a golden foam. It can be so beautiful.”

You can buy David Lynch Signature Cup Coffee at Amazon (click here for the House Blend and here for the Espresso Blend), and you can watch a 2015 commercial directed by Andrew Parkhurst for the coffee here.

Lynch isn’t the only celeb coffee connoisseur, however — Hugh Jackman also has his own signature brew. The Australian actor started Laughing Man Coffee Company in 2011 after a visit to Ethiopia, and contributes 100% of his profits to the Laughing Man Foundation, a charity he created to support educational programs, community development, and social entrepreneurs around the world.

The actor told The Daily Beast in 2018 that the charity worked on more than 100 projects the year before, including building irrigation systems, paying for home improvements, and sending 40 students to college.

“We wanted to work out how [we] could create a business model where we actually were giving back to the growers and the communities that bring us the beans that we drink every day,” he told the publication.

Laughing Man has two brick-and-mortar stores in New York City, but you can also purchase its coffee, including Hugh’s Blend, online. (It comes in recyclable K-cups, too.)

Another A-lister has also dipped his toes in the coffee world — La Colombe’s Lyon Blend was originally created with Leonardo DiCaprio, and all proceeds were donated to the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. (Its current edition donates $2 per box to the ACLU.)

After you pick up one of the star-approved signature blends, you’ll want something to drink it out of: These “Twin Peaks”-themed RR Diner mugs will do the trick if you want to do your best Dale Cooper impression.

And then you’ll want something to watch while you sip on your freshly brewed cup: There’s Jim Jarmusch’s 2003 film “Coffee and Cigarettes,” available for purchase on Amazon, and Jan Ole Gerster’s debut feature “A Coffee in Berlin” (IndieWire’s Eric Kohn likened the “delightful” black-and-white German indie to “Frances Ha,” but with a guy). There’s also the documentary “A Film Without Coffee,” available to buy or rent on Amazon, which explores “the origins and obsessions that go into every cup of specialty coffee.”

If you want to go the TV route, there’s “Twin Peaks,” of course, and then there are the java aficionados of Westeros in “Game of Thrones” (we kid, the errant coffee cup that made it to air in the final season was digitally removed by the powers that be at HBO — but you can still buy the season on Amazon).

Finally, you’ll need something to make sure your coffee retains one of its most important properties, at least according to Agent Cooper: It needs to be hot. This smart coffee warmer, available on Amazon, works automatically — its built-in gravity induction switch means you can place your mug on top and it’ll automatically turn on, keeping your coffee at a drinkable temperature of up to 131 degrees F or 55 degrees C. (Yes, it’s waterproof, which makes it both easy to clean and safe to use with liquids.)
