David Letterman became a dad in 2003.

He shares his son, Harry Letterman, with his wife Regina Lasko, whom he wed in 2009. Harry attended his parents' wedding when he was 5½ years old and David later joked that he didn’t think Harry completely understood the day’s events.

As David quipped on his show, "He [Harry] thought I was getting my driver's license because when you get there there is a lot of ‘Okay, sign this. Okay, fine. Okay, good. Okay, here you are.' ” Despite the confusion, David said the day was "kind of fun" because of Harry's inclusion.

While David kept Harry out of the spotlight when he was young, the talk show host did occasionally speak of his son on The Late Show. When David taped his final episode in 2015, he paid tribute to his wife and son.

"I want to thank my family," he said during the final segment of the show. "Thank you. Just seriously, thank you for being my family. I love you both and really nothing else matters, does it?"

The father-son duo have remained close, too. In 2022, Harry left home to go to college and David struggled with the transition. "Harry is my son, and all reports indicate that he's okay," David said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! while apologizing that he was "overly emotional" and adding that it was "devastating" to see his son move out and grow up.

David and Regina welcomed their son Harry on Nov. 3, 2003, in New York. David announced his son’s birth on his late-night talk show and told the audience, “I could never imagine ever being a part of something that turned out this beautiful.”

He added that Harry was 9 lbs., 11 oz. and then shared a personal story about Harry’s name. David said, "I named him after my father. My father ... passed away when he was 57. I’m 56 years old and yesterday I had my first child. So I named him for my father and his name is Harry Joseph Letterman. So God bless Dad and God bless Harry.”

He didn’t always understand his dad’s sense of humor

Growing up as the son of a legendary funny man was pretty confusing for Harry when he was young — at least according to his dad. In September 2007, David revealed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that his then-preschooler didn’t always get his sense of humor.

David explained to Oprah that Harry’s mom often had to tell their son that his dad was “just teasing” when a joke didn’t hit the right way with the young boy.

He might not have been interested in his dad's comedy at the time, but David did share some of his other hobbies. The talk show host added that Harry loved to watch airplanes take off and land and had a strong interest in collecting bugs.

David and his longtime partner Regina got married when their son was almost 6 years old, and Harry was a guest at the wedding. While interviewing Julia Roberts for a December 2009 show following his wedding day, David joked that his son didn’t quite understand the magnitude of what his parents were committing to.

But, the unique gift of having his young son there wasn’t lost on David, who said the nuptials made for "a nice day." He continued, “It was me, it was my son, it was Regina and it was the justice of the peace. And that was it. It’s legal. I mean, that’s the most important thing, right?”

He and his dad share a very specific trait

Harry has one particular thing in common with his famous dad: apparently, the two smell nearly exactly alike. While filming an episode of Late Show in 2008, David revealed, “I know everybody goes through it, but you know, four and a half years ago I was the only one in my house who smelled like I do. And now we got him walking around. He smells just the way I do! Now there's two of us who smell that way!”

In 2019, David opened up about his relationship with his then-16-year-old son. While speaking to Sunday Today, David explained that he wants to be close to Harry. “Look at me — how much longer am I going to be around?" David said. "I want to be the best friend. But he’s not keen on me being the best friend.”

They might not have achieved best friend status during Harry's teens, but David added that he feels the “most secure” when he's with his son.

Harry achieved a major milestone in September 2022 when he started college. David joked about his feelings surrounding the transition during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel a month after the big move. "The separation of the kid leaving home, I thought it would be nothing but it’s devastating," David said. "Am I the only one that feels that way?”

David continued, “He’s been gone a month today. We had a truckload of crap to take up to his room; and his room, man, it’s not as big as the [Kimmel's] desk.”

He added that although the empty-nester adjustment had been difficult, he kept joking with Harry, even during long-distance phone calls. Recounting a recent call, David shared, “I said, ‘Harry, have you met the kid yet that sells weed?’ I’m thinking this would get a good laugh. Harry says, ‘I cannot confirm or deny.' ”
