David Letterman Reveals How His Boss (and Makeup Person) Took the Retirement News

After 32 years, David Letterman is retiring from the late-night game. Yesterday’s announcement (he will stick around until 2015) was a surprise that inspired plenty of gushing tributes from famous fans, from Jimmy Kimmel to President Obama. But not everyone was so kind.

In this clip from tonight’s “Late Show” monologue, Dave recounts how CBS president Les Moonves reacted when Letterman called to inform him of his decision, joking that Les responded by asking, “Who is this?” But the real reason why he’s retiring, Letterman says, is because his makeup person, Jane, told him, “Dave? There’s really nothing more I can do.”

And he leaves it to guest Billy Crystal to ask the question that no one else seems to be asking: “What happens to Paul?”
