David Letterman Returns to “The Late Show” 8 Years After Leaving as Host: 'I Miss Everything'

“Mostly it's fun. Very few things in life provide one the opportunity [for hosting]," Letterman noted during his visit

David Letterman returned to his roots on Monday night.

The comedian, 76, was back in the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, for what marked his first appearance on The Late Show since he exited as host either years ago.

Taking the stage to sit down with successor Stephen Colbert, Letterman received a minute-long standing ovation from the audience.

He then address Colbert, seemingly quashing rumors of bad blood between them which began after Letterman visited several other late night TV shows in the past few years. “Congratulations on the great success you and your staff have had," the Late Show with David Letterman alum said.

“Thank you very much Dave," Colbert, 59, responded.

Letterman went on to offer a birthday shoutout to his wife, Regina Lasko, before he and Colbert discussed the “strange job” of hosting a late night television show, including their favorite hiding spots in the theater.

Colbert eventually asked Letterman what he “missed” about hosting “after all those 4,000 shows.”

“I miss everything,” Letterman shared. “Mostly it’s fun."

“Very few things in life provide one the opportunity," Letterman continued. “And I can't speak for you or to you on this topic, but for me, if you muck one up, 24 hours later you get to try again, And that's a pretty good device."

He added, "Then when you do something you're really proud of, you think, 'My God, let's do that again!' "

One of the highlights of the apperance was when Colbert brought out a selfie he took of himself as a guest with Letterman in the hosting chair around 2014, and asked the former talk show host if they could recreate it.

“This is great because I was going to ask you if I could have my picture taken at the desk,” Letterman said. “Do you mind?" — to which Colbert replied, “Let’s do it.”

The audience gave yet another standing ovation and cheered as the two walked over and switched spots. Once they switched, Colbert couldn’t help but ask Letterman, “What do you think of my supplies? Is that anything like what you had over there, down there?”

“What? All this weed?,” Letterman joked, which prompted a laugh from Colbert and the audience.

"By the way, in my day, I never would've let this happen,” Letterman added. “I'm sorry. Thank you.”

Colbert then snapped a selfie of the two smiling — nearly a decade since the original picture was taken. “David Letterman everybody!,” Colbert announced at the end of the show.
