It's always the most wonderful time of the year for Katharine McPhee and David Foster.

"I'll never take an opportunity to not celebrate the holidays," says McPhee, 39, who has spent the last two years fully embracing Christmas alongside Foster, her 74-year-old hitmaker husband and collaborator.

The couple, who are parents to son Rennie, 2½, have just released their updated album Christmas Songs.

"It's been kind of hard to get away from the holidays," says Foster with a laugh. "Last year we recorded seven songs and this year added seven songs. We were doing Christmas Songs in the summer last year and this year. We haven't been out of the Christmas spirit much in the last two years."

That said, Foster and McPhee admit they haven't had the chance to decorate this year.

"We were just moving into our new house that we built," explains McPhee. "And we've not been able to get permission to live there yet because of an occupancy problem, and the final certificate from the city."

Thankfully, she adds, "I just got an email that says it's approved, so of course I'm very excited. That means I get to get the boxes from storage and break out the Christmas. I go crazy with music and decorations."

The pair, who are gearing up to perform at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and are featured on multiple Christmas specials this year, say working together on holiday music is a breeze.

"I love it because you get a free pass," says Foster, who's produced numerous Christmas hits for stars like Michael Bublé. "When you're trying to make a hit, there's so much pressure. With Christmas music there's no rules. You can be as corny as you want."

Adds McPhee: "David and I met when I was a contestant on American Idol and worked together in the studio, so being in the studio together now is such a pleasure. He's one of the best vocal producers. I always just lean into his expertise."

And while the couple has been spending a lot of time apart, as Foster works on Boop!, the Betty Boop musical he's currently producing in Chicago, they're looking forward to some much-needed family time this holiday season.

"I'm living on the East Coast right now," says Foster, "so there's not much time we get together. Geography is splitting us up for now, but come Christmas we'll be back together again."
