Whitesnake are reissuing and expanding their covers album, The Purple Album, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of singer David Coverdale joining Deep Purple.

Originally released in 2015, The Purple Album was recorded by Coverdale along with guitarist Reb Beach, bassist Michael Devin, guitarist Joel Hoekstra, and drummer Tommy Aldridge, who, at the time, was appearing on a Whitesnake studio album for the first time since 1989. The collection cherry-picked songs from the three LPs Coverdale recorded with Deep Purple: Burn (1974), Stormbringer (1974), and Come Taste the Band (1975).

ETitled The Purple Album: Special Gold Edition, the upcoming expanded reissue is set to drop October 13th on 2-CD/Blu-Ray and double-LP vinyl formats — 50 years after Coverdale joined the Deep Purple.

In addition to the original tracklist in remixed/remastered form, the expanded edition also houses a plethora of bonus material, including unreleased recordings, live cuts, alternate mixes, video supplements (on the Blu-Ray version), and, most notably, the audition demo that secured Coverdale’s spot with Deep Purple.

Coverdale discovered the reel-to-reel demo — which was “extensively restored” for this release — among his late mother’s belongings. The four-song tape was recorded in 1972 with his former band The Fabulosa Brothers.

“I had no idea my Mam had the tape,” Coverdale said via a press release. “For me, to open my Mam’s trunk of personal items, 30 years after her passing, was a gift from Heaven.”
