There is a very beautiful and hilarious sequence of David’s great aunt Betsey hoping for a granddaughter and being extremely disappointed at David being born a male, due to her experience with men in general. The series next moves on to show how David’s childhood was beautiful and filled with love until his mother fell and love with another man, who is a disciplinarian, and with all his sternness ships David off to a boarding school. After repeated misfortunes befall David, he is left with his stepfather as his only guardian, and his life becomes extremely difficult.
This series marks the debut of Daniel Radcliffe as David Copperfield, with Maggie Smith as Betsey Trotwood, and Emilia Fox as Clara Copperfield. Also seen are, Trevor Eve as Edward Murdstone, and Ciarán McMenamin as adult David Copperfield. The cast also included Bob Hoskins, Alun Armstrong, Michael Elphick, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Ciarán McMenamin, Pauline Quirke, Ian McKellen, Zoë Wanamaker, Imelda Staunton, Joanna Page, Dawn French, and Tom Wilkinson.
