David Boreanaz, Shemar Moore officially returning to TV next season

David Boreanaz is trading his Bones suit for Navy SEAL camouflage and former Criminal Minds regular Shemar Moore is joining a SWAT team.

The actors’ guns-and-ammo projects were among a flurry of drama pilots that just got picked up to series by CBS, bringing back two hit procedural veterans into primetime. Shows starring Jeremy Piven (Entourage) and Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) received greenlights as well.

Here are the full rundown of current CBS orders for next season:

— SEAL Team from writer Ben Cavell (Justified). The pitch: “Follows the professional and personal lives of the most elite unit of Navy SEALs as they train, plan and execute the most dangerous, high-stakes missions our country can ask of them.” In addition to Boreanaz, the cast also includes Max Thieriot, Neil Brown Jr., A.J. Buckley, Toni Trucks and Jessica Paré.

— S.W.A.T. from writer Aaron Thomas (CSI: NY). This is a series version of the 2003 movie starring Samuel L. Jackson. Here Shemar Moore steps into the lead role. The pitch: “A locally born and bred S.W.A.T. sergeant is torn between loyalty to the streets and duty to his fellow officers when he’s tasked to run a specialized tactical unit that is the last stop in law enforcement in Los Angeles.” Also starring: Stephanie Sigman, Alex Russell, Jay Harrington, Lina Esco, Kenny Johnson, Peter Onorati.

— Instinct from writer Michael Rauch (Royal Pains). This one is more of a thriller than the other two and is based on an upcoming novel by James Patterson. The logline: “A former CIA operative (Alan Cumming) who has since built a ‘normal’ life as a gifted professor and writer is lured back into his old life when the NYPD needs his help to stop a serial killer.” Also starring Bojana Novakovic, Daniel Ings, Naveen Andrews, Khandi Alexander.

— Wisdom of the Crowd from writer Ted Humphrey (The Good Wife). Logline: “Inspired by the notion that a million minds are better than one, a visionary tech innovator (Jeremy Piven) creates a cutting-edge crowdsourcing app to solve his daughter’s murder, and revolutionize crime solving in the process. Based on the Israeli format of the same name.” Cast includes: Richard T. Jones, Jake Matthews, Blake Lee, Natalia Tena, Monica Potter.

The network also picked up two comedies:

— 9JKL: “A family comedy inspired by a time in Mark Feuerstein’s adult life when he lived in apartment 9K in the building he grew up in, sandwiched between his doting parents’ apartment, 9J, and his brother, sister-in-law and their baby’s apartment, 9L, and his attempts to set boundaries with his intrusive but well-meaning family.” Starring Mark Feuerstein, Linda Lavin, Elliott Gould, David Walton, Liza Lapira, Matt Murray

— Me, Myself & I: A single-camera comedy examining one man’s life over a 50-year span. The show will focus on three distinct periods in his life – as a 14-year-old in 1991, a 40-year-old in present day, and a 65-year-old in 2042. Starring: Bobby Moynihan, Jack Dylan Grazer, Brian Unger, Jaleel White, Kelen Coleman, Skylar Gray, Christopher Paul Richards, Mandell Maughan, Reylynn Caster, with Sharon Lawrence and John Larroquette.

— By the Book (formerly Living Biblically): Based on A.J. Jacobs’ book The Year of Living Biblically, “A modern day man (Jay R. Ferguson) at a crossroads in his life decides to live according to the Bible. Also stars Lindsey Kraft, Ian Gomez, David Krumholtz, Tony Rock, Camryn Manheim. Fun fact: Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki is among the executive producers.
