Dave Wins 2019 Mercury Prize Over the 1975, slowthai, More

South London rapper Dave has won the 2019 Mercury Prize. His album Psychodrama won the honor over nominated albums by the 1975, slowthai, black midi, Foals, Nao, Little Simz, and others. Watch Dave’s reaction to the win below.

The award honors the best British album of the last 12 months as chosen by a panel of British music critics and industry professionals. Last year, Wolf Alice took home the prize for Visions of a Life, which beat out records by King Krule, Arctic Monkeys, and more. Previous recipients of the award include Sampha, James Blake, PJ Harvey, Pulp, Portishead, Antony and the Johnsons, and others. During this year’s Mercury Prize performances, slowthai held up the faux severed head of Boris Johnson while onstage.
