‘Date with Dad’ returns to Doyle

“Date with Dad” returned to Doyle Community Center Friday following two years of cancellations due to the pandemic.

Dads (or other male figures) and their daughters were happy to be back. About 530 dads and daughters attended the event, the biggest showing yet, said Heather Kyle, front desk supervisor at Doyle.

"Date with Dad" took on a Hollywood theme this year, complete with a red carpet, music, dancing and photo opportunities. The theme had been planned for 2020, said Kyle, but the pandemic had hit the week of that event as she recalls. Kyle and former recreation supervisor Benita Lewis had been storing the props for this year’s “Date with Dad” in their basements for the past two years.

Mike Liston, Doyle director, said it was nice to see everyone out again and things a bit back to normal. In past years, “Date with Dad” was limited to girls ages 3-12, but age restrictions were eliminated this year to accommodate those who may have missed out, Liston said.

“’Date with Dad’ is always our biggest event of the year,” Liston said. “Everyone looks forward to it.”

That includes both dads and daughters, Liston said. It even includes Liston himself who was attending the event with daughter Olivia for the last time as she is 12.

“We’ve been coming since she was 3,” Liston said.

Liston also wished to thank sponsors: Meijer, A&K Printing & Pools, and Berkshire Hathaway (Ben Myers). Lewis and Doyle employee McCully Kyle also made 700 cupcakes for the event (in one day) and Key Club members volunteered at the event, too. DJ was Tanner Parshall.

Kaysee Washburn, new recreation supervisor, already has been working on next year’s “Date with Dad,” which will take on a “Donut Grow Up” theme.
