Daryl Hall on Being Sampled by the xx: “Have Fun and Pay Me”

The group’s new song “On Hold” interpolates Hall and Oates’ “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do).”

By Matthew Strauss.

Earlier today, the xx shared the first song from their forthcoming record I See You. It’s called “On Hold,” and it samples Hall and Oates’ 1981 track “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do).” Daryl Hall has now commented on the band’s use of his work. “It’s always interesting to hear what somebody does with my songs,” he told Genius. “After a song is written, it belongs to the world and can be interpreted anyway they want. As long as I get paid, of course. Have fun and pay me.” Hear “On Hold,” as well as the sampled Hall and Oates song, below.

I See You comes out January 13 via Young Turks. Next week, the xx will perform on the November 19 episode of “Saturday Night Live,” hosted by Kristen Wiig. See the group’s upcoming tour dates here.
