Darth Maul Inspires Impressive New 'Star Wars' Fan Film

Even fans who loathe the Star Wars prequels would probably concede that Darth Maul was a pretty cool character, one who lives on within The Clone Wars cartoon universe even after dying in The Phantom Menace,.

Still, that wasn’t enough for filmmakers Shawn Bu and Vi-Dan Tran. In conjunction with T7 Pro, their film production company based in Germany, they made a 17-minute fan film called Darth Maul: Apprentice that puts the baddie front and center.

The short, posted on YouTube yesterday, has already exceeded 900,000 views, aided by a lively Reddit thread, which (mostly) praises the team’s efforts, as well as shout-outs from Entertainment Weekly, Gizmodo (which calls it a “really beautifully shot film”), Zap2It, and other media outlets.

The film is short on plot – the gist is that Darth Maul is still in Sith training mode and must engage in light saber battles with several Jedi – but as others have said, the visual effects, quality of the fight choreography, and overall production values are impressive, especially for a fan film. Perhaps this Darth Maul movie will spawn its own fan-film franchise.
