Darius Miles was one of two suspects arrested and charged with capital murder Sunday after the shooting death of a 23-year-old woman named Jamea Jonae Harris near the Strip in Tuscaloosa, according to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.

Miles, who was on the Alabama basketball team, is being held without bond in the county jail. The other suspect is Michael Lynn Davis, who has also been jailed without bond.

Here are the details of the shooting, more information on Miles and what we know about the charges and what they mean.

Who is Darius Miles?

Miles, 21, is from the Washington, D.C. area. He was in his third year as a student at UA and his third season on the Alabama basketball team.

He attended IMG Academy before arriving at UA and was a three-star prospect coming out of high school, according to the 247Sports Composite. He picked Alabama over offers from Georgetown, Rhode Island, Rutgers and Seton Hall.

Details on the shooting

The shooting was determined to have occurred in the 400 block of Grace Street off University Boulevard.

The shooting appeared to be the result of a minor argument between the victims and suspects, according to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.

Capt. Jack Kennedy, commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, didn’t say Sunday who investigators believe pulled the trigger, but he did say both suspects are being charged because their actions led to Harris’ death.

Harris was the passenger in the vehicle, but the driver of the vehicle told officers the vehicle had been shot into and he had fired back in self-defense.

The vehicle stopped at the Walk of Champions for help after spotting a UA police vehicle. Then officers were dispatched there at 1:45 a.m. Sunday.

Darius Miles' status with Alabama basketball

Miles is no longer a member of the Crimson Tide basketball team, UA announced in a statement Sunday.

"First and foremost, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victim from last night’s incident," the statement read. "We were made aware of the recent charge against student-athlete Darius Miles, and he is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team. Athletics, in conjunction with the University, is fully cooperating with this investigation."

Miles had been in attendance Saturday for the LSU game at Coleman Coliseum. He was with the team but in street clothes. Miles had been ruled out for the season before the game because of an ankle injury.

He only saw time in six games this season. He had been dealing with the ankle injury since the preseason. Miles also missed some time for what coach Nate Oats called "personal reasons" after the Mississippi State game.

Miles averaged 6.5 minutes per game this season and did not start any games. His last appearance was the Jackson State game on Dec. 20. A season ago, he played in 30 contests and received two starts, averaging 17.2 minutes per game.

What does a capital murder charge mean in Alabama?

For a crime to be classified as capital murder, there has to be a special circumstance. In the case of this incident, this is considered capital murder because the victim was shot in a vehicle.

It is a capital offense because it is "murder committed by or though the use of a deadly weapon while the victim is in a vehicle," according to Alabama Criminal Code Title 13A-5-40.

The death sentence or life in prison without parole are both possible in the state of Alabama if someone is found guilty of capital murder

Although those are possible, defendants often enter into plea agreements for a lesser sentence. That lesser sentence can be given in order for prosecutors to receive a guilty plea on a less serious offense.
