Daredevil: Born Again will all but begin again, as the Disney+/Marvel collaboration undergoes a massive creative overhaul.

After Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige and other Marvel execs reviewed footage from the first few episodes that were filmed ahead of the SAG-AFTRA strike, it was determined that the don’t-call-it-a-revival “reboot” wasn’t working, our sister site THR reports. (To cite but one critique, sources told THR, headliner Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock didn’t don his Daredevil costume until Episode 4.)

As such, head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord (of Covert Affairs fame), plus any directors that had been booked for the remainder of the season, were “quietly” released from the project in late September. A search is now underway for replacements to “rethink the original intention of the show,” though some already-filmed scenes/episodes may be retained.

Greenlit back in July 2022, Daredevil: Born Again has Cox (of Netflix’s Marvel’s Daredevil) again playing Matt Murdock/Daredevil, while Vincent D’Onofrio is reprising (a version of) his own Marvel’s Daredevil role, as supervillain Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.

Spring 2024 release date was very recently scrapped, and not rescheduled – -quite understandably, in light of the aforementioned overhaul.

It is said that in the wake of the Daredevil mess and others (such as Secret Invasion) that preceded it, Marvel will start assigning hiring showrunners, whereas until now the studio had very diligently only named “head writers” and directors.

New details on Daredevil: Born Again — or at least what Corman and Ord had planned — recently emerged via a filing with the U.S. Copyright Office.

“Marvel Studios presents ‘Daredevil,'” the document read, “in which longtime rivals Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk try to leave behind their darker alter-egos to serve the people of New York only to have their pasts catch up to them. In the first episode of the series we are reintroduced to the world of Daredevil.”

Other cast double-secret officially confirmed via the U.S. Copyright Office filing are Jon Bernthal (reprising his Netflix series role, or a version thereof, of Frank Castle aka Punisher), Margarita Levieva (Revenge) as Heather Glenn, Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark) as Daniel Blade, Sandrine Holt (House of Cards) as a “recast” Vanessa Fisk, Nikki M James (Severance) as Kirsten McDuffie, Genneya Walton (Never Have I Ever) as BB Uric, Clark Johnson (Evil, Bosch) as Cherry, Arty Froushan (Carnival Row) as Buck Cashman and Zabryna Guevara (New Amsterdam) as Sheila Rivera.
