Danny DeVito Says Arnold Schwarzenegger 'Should Have Done “Twins 2” Instead of Becoming Governor'

Danny DeVito is teasing a possible onscreen reunion with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

"Arnold and I want to work together,” DeVito, 78, said in an interview with GQ about his starring role in Broadway's I Need That. 

He joked, “We missed Twins 2, because he became governor — which, he should have done Twins 2 instead of becoming governor."

Schwarzenegger, 76, put his acting career on hold when he ran for the California governorship. The Terminator actor served in office from 2003 to 2011.

Schwarzenegger costarred with DeVito in the 1998 movie Twins. Directed by Ivan Reitman, the buddy comedy about genetically engineered fraternal twins separated at birth has had a sequel in the works for years.

Called Triplets and set to costar first Eddie Murphy and then Tracy Morgan, the project was reportedly stalled due to Reitman’s death in 2022. 

DeVito and Schwarzenegger reunited in Reitman’s 1994 comedy Junior, which costarred Emma Thompson and featured Schwarzenegger as a doctor undergoing a male pregnancy. And in 1993’s Schwarzenegger-led The Last Action Hero, DeVito appeared as the voice of a cartoon cat detective.

Talking to GQ about his past and future work, DeVito hinted that he and Schwarzenegger “have a little thing going, a little project that we've been chatting about."

Asked if it’s related to Twins, he responded, “No, it's just two friends, two guys.”

“Because we have a good time together. We complement each other in a lot of ways.” DeVito added, “I am way stronger than he is.”

In May, Schwarzenegger confirmed he and the Taxi star were collaborating on a future project. 

“I’m developing another movie with Danny,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “He’s so much fun to work with and so talented.” Schwarzenegger also claimed that Triplets fell through because of lack of interest from Reitman’s son and fellow director, Jason Reitman.

In an interview with The Sunday Times in February, DeVito revealed details about his longtime friendship with his costar. “Arnold loves his animals, and he still smokes his stogies,” he said.

Of the stable of pets that live on Schwarzenegger’s property, DeVito added, “The animals just roam around all over the place.”

I Need That, from playwright Theresa Rebeck and director Moritz von Stuelpnagel, features DeVito onstage opposite his daughter, Lucy DeVito, and Ray Anthony Thomas.

It’s his second run on Broadway after making his debut with a Tony-nominated performance in Arthur Miller’s The Price in 2017.
