Danielle Brooks Loves Her Bag That Lets Her 4-Year-Old Scoot Around Airport: ‘I Should Win Mom of the Year’

The actress, who stars in the new movie musical 'The Color Purple', spoke to PEOPLE for One Last Thing

Danielle Brooks loves a good impulse buy, and her latest one had a surprise perk.

The actress, 34, who is also a mom to daughter Freeya, 4, with husband Dennis Gelin, first saw the item on Instagram and then purchased it on Amazon. "It's this luggage carry-on that is also a scooter," she tells PEOPLE in this week's issue.

"So my daughter can scoot around the airport. And I'm so happy because my husband's traveling solo with her, so I feel like I have properly prepared him for the trip. I feel like I should win Mom of the Year."

Last superstition
There’s this one about if you put your purse on the floor, you’ll lose money, so I don’t put purses on the floor. I will find a hook, a chair, a table. Mentally I’m like, “I have no reason to lose money.”

Last time I had mom brain
I cannot keep up with my schedule. The other day I had to ask the driver, “Ma’am, what’s today? Is it Saturday?” and she’s like, “No, it’s Tuesday.”

Last time my daughter made me laugh
She takes tennis lessons, and the coach said, “If you can’t make it, we’ll get you makeup classes.” My daughter says in front of everyone, “My mommy has makeup.” We all just started laughing.

Last wardrobe malfunction
At the Black Excellence Luncheon, I had on this dress that was corseted in the back, and it started to lose its shape. I was on the carpet, and my stylist pulled me to the bathroom to reposition it. I was nervous that my girls were going to say hi to the world.

The Color Purple is now playing in theaters.
