In 2010, “Weird” Al Yankovic released a spoof trailer for a biopic about his life. Now, 12 years later he’s turned that trailer into a full-length film that’s being released this fall.
The film, aptly titled WEIRD: The ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Story, was written by Yankovic himself alongside Eric Appel, who also serves as the film’s director. The “unexaggerated true story” promises to hold “nothing back, exploring every facet of Yankovic’s life, from his meteoric rise to fame with early hits like ‘Eat It’ and ‘Like a Surgeon’ to his torrid celebrity love affairs and famously depraved lifestyle.”
To that point, the newly released trailer features scenes of “Weird Al” (played by Daniel Radcliffe) writing “My Bologna” and being discovered by Dr. Demento (Rainn Wilson), as well as of his romantic fling with Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood) and the drug fueled bender that nearly cost his career.
Sure, some creative liberties may have been taken, but this certainly appears to be the definitive telling of “Weird Al”‘s life and career — warts and all.
WEIRD: The ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Story will receive its worldwide premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8th. It will then be released exclusively on The Roku Channel on November 4th.
The real “Werid Al” is amidst “The Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent Ill-Advised Vanity Tour,” a lengthy 133-date jaunt that will keep the comedian until the end of October. Get tickets here.
