The enduring friendship between Daniel Radcliffe and his Harry Potter stunt double, who was paralyzed during a stunt while filming, is the focus of the upcoming documentary David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived, which premieres on HBO later this month.

Holmes, a gymnast as a child, was selected to serve as Radcliffe’s stunt double on the blockbuster wizard franchise, with the actor and his double essentially growing up together over the course of seven films.

“Over the next ten years, the two form an inextricable bond, but on the penultimate film a tragic accident on set leaves David paralyzed with a debilitating spinal injury, turning his world upside down,” HBO said in a synopsis.

As Radcliffe says in the trailer, “It is unfair. He shouldn’t have had to do anything of that. This terrible thing happened to Dave, but I don’t want to talk as if his life is a tragedy.”

HBO continued, “As Daniel and his closest stunt colleagues rally to support David and his family in their moment of need, it is David’s extraordinary spirit of resilience that becomes their greatest source of strength and inspiration.”

David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived, premiering November 15 on HBO and MAX, was executive produced by Radcliffe. The documentary features behind-the-scenes footage from the Potter films, as well as new interviews with the cast and crew, as well as Holmes’ family and friends.

“I’m so lucky. I’ve had such a crazy life. Such highs and such lows,” Holmes says in the trailer. “But I was about to find light in the darkest of places.”
