“DWTS” is an amateur dance competition that assembles celebrities from all walks of life — film, TV, music, theater, social media, sports and more — and pairs them with professional dancers. Every week those pros train their dance partners in a new dance style, which they’ll then perform live for a panel of judges including Carrie Ann Inaba, six-time Mirror Ball champion Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli. The judges score the dancers on a scale of one to 10. But the judges’ scores only account for half of the show’s results. Viewers at home can also vote in real time to decide who stays and who goes.

This season is hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough, who are both Mirror Ball champs in their own right. Hough is replacing Tyra Banks, who had hosted the show from season 29 through season 31 after the ouster of longtime Emmy-winning emcee Tom Bergeron. But this season almost went off the rails before it even began. It was picketed by Writers Guild of America members on strike because “DWTS” employs a WGA writer on its staff. Thankfully, a tentative deal to end the strike was reached on Sunday night, September 24, prompting the show to move forward as planned.
