“I wasn’t surprised. I knew she was going to be someone that was going to be a surprise elimination,” says Gold Derby contributor Cordell Martin about the sudden ouster of Lele Pons on “Dancing with the Stars” at the end of “Music Video Night.” “As it has gotten closer towards the end of the competition it just felt that she didn’t have the opportunity to really find her footing and become a top contender. She was starting to gain that momentum, but I felt like it was a little too late.” He discussed that and more with fellow contributor Jeffrey Kare and editor Daniel Montgomery in their week seven slugfest. Watch it above.

Pons’s elimination leaves seven contestants in the competition, so what can we expect from them on “Whitney Houston Night“? “I don’t think we should have anything to worry about with Xochitl [Gomez],” argues Kare, and Martin and Montgomery agree, though they think “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” is an odd choice of song for her tango. Martin is especially looking forward to Charity Lawson‘s routine, though. The “Bachelorette” star is dancing a Viennese waltz to the classic “I Will Always Love You,” which Martin thinks “is going to be the dance that’s going to get her hopefully a perfect score, if not near perfect.”

The night will end with dance-offs, from which Ariana Madix is exempt after getting the highest judges score on “Music Video Night.” But the way the pairings shook out, Montgomery thinks “these routines all have kind of obvious potential winners”; he suspects Gomez has the edge against Lawson in their head-to-head, Jason Mraz will overtake Barry Williams, and Alyson Hannigan will defeat Harry Jowsey. But maybe the front-runners won’t have it so easy. Martin counters, “I could see it on paper being Xochitl, but probably when it’s all said and done Charity sneaking out the surprise win.” Who’s right? We’ll find out tonight.
