‘Dancing with the Stars’ week 5 slugfest: Sad for Sorvino, and the ‘Monster Night’ dance we’re most excited to see [WATCH]

We thought there was a possibility that “Most Memorable Year Night” on “Dancing with the Stars” would be a non-elimination night, but alas, Oscar winner Mira Sorvino was sent home at the end of the evening. Gold Derby contributor Cordell Martin “was kind of bummed that Mira went home earlier than I think we would love for her to go,” but “she was just one of those contestants … who’s really good, but just couldn’t find her footing in terms of being at the top of the leaderboard or having that strong fan base to carry her through.” Watch Martin’s slugfest with Jeffrey Kare and Daniel Montgomery above.

We didn’t just shed tears for Sorvino, though. “Most Memorable Year” was also the night the show paid tribute to late judge Len Goodman, who died this past April after appearing on the show since its debut in 2005. Pro dancers Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson choreographed the group waltz, which featured many professional dancers from the show’s past. “I think I started to tear up myself,” said Martin. “It was a beautiful tribute to Len. I thought that Val and Jenna deserve an Emmy nomination and/or win in my opinion.” Kare adds, “It was a very touching tribute. And I really loved the instrumental version of one of the great movie songs of all time, ‘Moon River.'”

SEE‘Dancing with the Stars’ scares up a Dance Monster-thon for Monster Night

This coming Tuesday night, though, should be a lot more fun. The October 31 episode will be “Monster Night,” and Montgomery, Martin and Kare break down all the routines set to be performed by the nine remaining celebrities. On paper, one stands out from all the rest, though: Jason Mraz and Daniella Karagach will be performing a contemporary routine to “Zombie” by The Cranberries.

“Daniella doing a contemporary on a Halloween night. Does that sound familiar to you?” asks Montgomery. Karagach also performed a Halloween-themed contemporary a couple of seasons ago with Iman Shumpert, and the “Us”-styled dance turned out to be an instant classic, earning Karagach her first Emmy nomination for choreography. Oh, and she and Shumpert ended up winning the Mirror Ball Trophy. Can the pro dancer and her new partner catch lightning in a bottle the same way? We’re excited to see them try. “I think this is definitely going to put Jason back into the conversation as the potential champ this season,” argues Martin. What do you think?
