At the end of “Disney100 Night” on “Dancing with the Stars,” the three celebs in jeopardy — though not necessarily the actual bottom three — were Lele Pons, Barry Williams and Adrian Peterson, with Peterson ultimately eliminated based on the combination of judges’ scores and viewer votes. “I figured he wasn’t going to last,” says Gold Derby contributor Cordell Martin. But the fact that the show has stopped announcing the real bottom two is getting annoying. Watch my slugfest with Martin and fellow contributor Jeffrey Kare above.

“I think the approach that they’ve had the last two weeks has kind of thrown off the typical way we’re used to seeing the results,” Martin explains. “So maybe they wanted to switch it up just so people won’t feel like, ‘Oh, my gosh, America must think I suck'” if they’re consistently revealed to be in the bottom two. “On the flip side, you know, that can give them that extra false sense of confidence that like, ‘Wow, I’m doing really well.’ And then the next week they go home. So it’s kind of a double-edged sword.”

Another difference between this season and last has been the lack of a judges’ save. In recent seasons the judges’ have gotten to vote on which of the bottom two celebrities they wanted to save and which to send home. Not so this year, though host Alfonso Ribeiro has mentioned the lack of a save more than once this season, so “I feel like they may introduce or talk about the judges’ save after this week moving forward,” Martin predicts. And “because of how heavy and emotional it’s going to be” on “Most Memorable Year Night” with a tribute to late judge Len Goodman, “I feel like it’s going to be a non-elimination week.”

“I too am looking forward to it,” adds Kare about “Most Memorable Year,” which will be chock-full of contemporary dances. “I think a lot of emotions will be running through everyone, both on the stage and the audience and those watching at home. And to Cordell’s theory that we might not get an elimination, well, let’s hope that doesn’t mean there will be a double elimination the following week, even though it probably would likely happen.”
