Dancing With the Stars crowned its season 32 champion on Tuesday (Dec. 6). After a crowded three-hour finale episode featuring a redemption dance and a freestyle, the five remaining couples — Alyson Hannigan and Sasha Farber, Daniella Karagach and Jason Mraz, Ariana Madix and Pasha Pashkov, Charity Lawson and Artem Chigvintsev, and Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy — awaited the news as to who would win the coveted mirrorball trophy — this year renamed the Len Goldman Mirrorball Trophy in honor of the popular late judge. It eventually came down to Grammy winner Mraz and 17-year-old actress Gomez.

The winner? The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star and pro partner Chmerkovskiy, who took home his third victory.

The young actress went into the finale atop the leaderboard with perfect scores from the previous week, but she faced tough competition from Mraz as well as Vanderpump Rules star Ariana Madix, who ultimately finished in third. Hannigan placed fifth, and Lawson snagged fourth place. (The winner was determined by the judges’ scores from both the semifinals and finals, combined with viewer votes.)

In the redemption round, Gomez and Mraz were both assigned to do foxtrots, while the reality star drew the samba. Gomez and Mraz both earned perfect 30s, while Madix was dinged a point by judge Carrie Ann Inaba, and nabbed a 29.

In the fan-favorite freestyle dance, all three delivered energetic, passionate crowd-pleasers. The teen star channeled her heritage with a dance to “Que Calor” by District 78, while the musician delivered precision footwork to “Happy” by C2C, and newly announced Broadway star Madix — who is set to star as Roxie Hart in Chicago — offered up an empowering dance to Beyonce’s “Run the World (Girls).” All three earned perfect 30s.

The final combined judges’ scores for the finale:

  • Xochi and Val: 120 out of 120

  • Charity and Artem: 118 out of 120

  • Ariana and Pasha: 117 out of 120

  • Jason and Daniella: 117 out of 120

  • Alyson and Sacha: 104 out of 120

After viewer votes were added to the judges’ scores, it was Gomez who took the mirrorball trophy home.
