Dex Carvey, the eldest son of comedian Dana Carvey, has died at the age of 32. Carvey, 68, and his wife Paula Zwagerman, announced his death in a statement posted Thursday to Instagram.

“Last night we suffered a terrible tragedy. Our beloved son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 32 years old,” Dana and Paula wrote in their post. “Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things — music, art, film making, comedy — and pursued all of them passionately,” they said. “It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life.”

“And when you were with him, you loved life too,” their message continued. “He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend, Kaylee. Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever.”

Their statement ended with a message to “anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction,” and added, “you are in our hearts and prayers. Dana & Paula.”

Carvey later posted a photo of his son on Instagram with the caption: “Fuck the tabloids. This is my boy.” He also shared a photo of the pair working together, writing “What a joy.”

Before his death, Dex Carvey followed his father into comedy and opened for Dana’s 2016 Netflix special, Straight White Male. In 2022, Dana and his sons released The Weird Place, a sci-fi comedy podcast-adventure produced by Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco.
