Dan and Shay's wives have inspired a number of the country duo’s hits

Dan + Shay fans have the singers’ wives, Abby Smyers and Hannah Mooney, to thank for some of the country duo's biggest hits.

Dan and Abby have been married since May 2017, and the animal lovers have four dogs: Joy, Ghost, Chief and Macaroni. Shay and Hannah wed a few months later in October 2017. They share three sons: Asher, Ames and Abram.

Dan + Shay are known for writing romantic songs, and many of their hits were inspired by their wives, including “Speechless” and “Glad You Exist.”

“We write all these songs and we're inspired because we have incredible wives, and we get to write songs and write about what we know, and we're both married and we know what it’s like to love,” Shay told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 in 2022.

Here's everything to know about Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney’s wives, Abby Smyers and Hannah Mooney.

Dan and Abby wed in 2017

Born Abby Law, the marketing manager is a Chiefs fan originally from the Kansas City area, where her father, Mike Kennedy, is a retired radio personality and member of the Country Radio Hall of Fame.

She met Dan in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2013, and the pair got engaged on Waikiki Beach in Hawaii on Nov. 18, 2016.

"I think we've acted like [husband and wife] for the past few years so it'll be nice to make it official," Dan told PEOPLE as he debuted his engagement photos in March 2017. "Everybody's timeline is different but by the time we got engaged, we were so familiar with each other that there wasn't anything foreign or scary."

Dan and Abby married in a sunset ceremony in Nashville — the city where Dan said “we built our love story” — on May 13, 2017.

The couple doesn't have children but are proud pet parents to four dogs: Joy, Ghost, Chief, and Macaroni. The first three were a part of their wedding party, with Dan joking to PEOPLE that the pups were "the most important bridesmaid and groomsmen.”

“The father to our canines. The keeper of my heart. The hardest working man I know. My best friend. My partner. My husband. Thank you for making my dreams come true and choosing me to walk beside you in this life,” Abby wrote on Instagram shortly after their wedding.

In May 2024, the couple celebrated seven years of marriage. Abby marked the day with a post on Instagram, writing, "The way I know that we would have always found each other. I love you so deeply. Happy Anniversary, @dansmyers."

Dan responded in the comments. "Love you so much! And even more with every passing year. Can’t believe it’s already been 7. Happy anniversary to my favorite person in the world," he said.

Dan and Abby are animal lovers

Dogs are at the core of Dan and Abby’s relationship — the two met at a Nashville-based animal rescue center, according to Country Living.

When Dan shared his engagement news on Instagram, he wrote, “We're gonna save all the animals together, FOREVER,” alongside a selfie that showed off Abby’s ring and a rainbow across the Hawaii skyline.

Rescue dogs are still important to the pair, who volunteer and foster through the Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue in Tennessee. The duo also sponsored a part of the Wags & Walks Rescue Nashville adoption center that opened in July 2023.

Dan credits Abby for keeping him on a positive path

When Dan + Shay went through a rough patch, they leaned on their wives, and keep doing so.

“She continues to save my life every day, honestly. I can't say enough good things. She just has such a different outlook on life than I do," the “You” singer told PEOPLE of Abby in 2023. "She sees just the hope and positivity and happiness and optimism and everything."

Abby also helps Dan center himself when he starts “complaining or spiraling.”

“She's helped me through dark times when I was sad,” he explained. “Who knows? I may have quit music or moved back to my hometown, but she'll just talk me off the ledge and calm me down.”

Abby helped inspire the title of Dan + Shay’s album Bigger Houses

Abby — who has appeared in Dan + Shay's “Nothin’ Like You” and “10,000 Hours” music videos — inspired the title for the band’s fifth studio album, Bigger Houses, which is also immortalized in the title track.

“That was her phrase,” Dan explained. "Everybody's always looking on Zillow and Abby was like, ‘Man, we're always talking about bigger houses when we've got it really good right now. We don't need bigger houses. We've got everything we need, people that we love."

Both Abby and Hannah inspired much of the Bigger Houses album.

“@abbysmyers + @hannah.billingsley, you have not only inspired these songs, but you have believed in us through every step of our journey, which we know hasn’t always been easy,” Dan + Shay wrote in part on Instagram. “We’re more grateful for your love + support than we could ever put into words.”

The singer’s wives have also been muses for several of Dan + Shay's hits, including “Speechless.” The song was inspired by both men seeing their respective wives at the end of their wedding aisles, and the music video included clips from their weddings.

“The first thing my wife and I did on our anniversary was watch that video and we were both speechless. We ended up watching our entire wedding video later in the day,” Dan told PEOPLE in 2018.

Shay and Hannah have been together since 2015

Shay told PEOPLE it was love at first sight when he met Hannah (née Billingsley), a former Miss Arkansas and current host of the podcast Unexpected with Hannah Love.

The two had been texting on and off for a few years, but in March 2015, Hannah directly asked Shay if his band was ever coming to Arkansas. It turned out Dan + Shay were going to be in her town, Fayetteville, four days later, and the two officially met at George’s Majestic Lounge on March 11, according to Arkansas Bride, That night, Shay asked Hannah if she would be his date to the Academy of Country Music Awards.

“Shay is everything I never knew I needed,” Hannah told the outlet. “I truly never imagined being with a man in the music industry, so it took me some time to come around.”

After about a year and a half of dating, Shay and Hannah got engaged in Arkansas on Aug. 9, 2016. The couple had a secret wedding that night — which was a surprise to Hannah. Shay popped the question as his hit song, “From the Ground Up,” played on the radio, and the two drove to a stone chapel, where he had brought their family and friends together for the impromptu event. They kept news of the small ceremony private for a few years.

“From the very first time I saw her, I knew I wanted to marry her,” Mooney told PEOPLE, adding, “She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me, so I had to lock it down. She’s my better — and much better-looking — half.”

Shortly after, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together. Their son, Asher James, was born on Jan. 24, 2017.

The two held a larger wedding on the Mooney family property in Arkansas on Oct. 20, 2017. Asher, then 9 months old, was a part of the wedding, sporting a baby tux as he was carried down the aisle, and both Dan and the duo’s guitarist, Justin Richards, served as groomsmen. The nuptials were followed by a honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico.

Shay and Hannah have three sons

In addition to Asher, the Mooneys are parents to two more boys.

Their middle child, Ames Alexander, was born on Feb. 21, 2020, in Nashville, Tennessee. He weighed in at 6 lbs., 7 oz. and measured 19.5 inches long.

“Our family is ecstatic,” the couple told PEOPLE. “Ames is absolutely perfect!”

Their third child, son Abram Shay, joined the family on Jan. 17, 2023.

It took a little bit for Asher to get on board with having a second brother. In an Instagram post, Hannah talked to Asher and Ames about whether they thought they were getting a brother or sister. After learning the new baby would be a boy, Asher declared, "I wanted a sister.”

The “When I Pray for You” singer often waxes poetic about his wife on social media, including a sweet tribute shared in honor of Mother's Day 2023.

“Watching you with our babies is truly inspiring,” the “Tequila” singer wrote in part on Instagram, alongside photos of Hannah with their sons. “You’re beautiful, patient, kind, and lead with a love only a momma has. I’m so proud of all you’ve done, but I’m most proud of how you love our boys. Whatever this life has in store I’m ready.”

Abby and Hannah kept Dan + Shay from splitting up

Dan + Shay nearly broke up back in 2021, going without speaking for four months after completing their arena tour that year. They've since reconciled, and we have their wives to thank for helping the musical duo stay afloat.

“I think Abby has given me such a great perspective and inspired me to enjoy the ride a little bit more,” Dan told PEOPLE.

Shay, who is recently sober, shared a similar sentiment about his wife, saying, “She is an absolute angel, my wife. She was my lifeline through all of this. It’s not an easy thing to kind of sit back and watch the person that you love destroy themselves with what they eat and with drinking too much.”

The country duo, who’ve been together for 12 years, rebuilt their relationship from scratch. Shay told people that he and Dan “redefined what we think success is,” which has meant focusing on the most important people in their lives — each other and their respective families — and Dan feels the same way.

“Our relationships at home are in such a great place because of the work we've done personally, individually, and I think it all trickles down,” Dan said.

They are red carpet regulars

Dan + Shay fans are often as excited to see Abby and Hannah on the red carpet as they are the singer-songwriters.

The two couples often pose together at big-name events, including the 57th Annual CMA Awards in November 2023, the CMT Music Awards in June 2019 and the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in February 2019, amongst many others.

Although the cameras didn't catch the sweet moment, during the 2023 CMA Awards, Abby and Hannah were spotted in the audience, pumping their arms and singing every word to Dan + Shay’s "Save Me the Trouble."

Their first red carpet double-date night happened in 2016 at the 51st Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas.

Though the Smyerses and Mooneys have fun attending major Hollywood occasions, it’s the time spent at home that they enjoy the most.

"Our favorite thing to do during the holiday season is just be home with our families," Dan told PEOPLE in 2022. "Our schedules are so busy, we're touring nonstop pretty much the whole year round — so the holiday season is a good time for us to slow down, to reflect.”
