Dan Patrick says Greg Abbott is 'misinformed' after praising House vote on property taxes

After Gov. Greg Abbott praised the Texas House for passing its own property tax relief bill, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick criticized him in a lengthy message.

In a tweet issued by Patrick's office that total over 1,400 words, Patrick suggested that Abbott seemed "misinformed about the roles of the executive and legislative branches of government."

"While the Governor has the sole authority to call the Legislature into Session, the Legislature writes the bills — the courts have been crystal clear on this," the tweet read.

The response came after Patrick's property tax plan, Senate Bill 1, was not endorsed by Abbott. The bill proposed raising the homestead exemption from $40,000 to $100,000. Throughout the regular session, the House and Senate could not agree on the upper chamber's proposed homestead exemption or the lower chamber's push to limit property appraisal increases.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Dade Phelan proposed lowering the annual property appraisal cap from 10% to 5% in his body, with House taking up his measure and not Patrick's.

All parties pressed their version of the property tax bill as being "germane" to the Abbott's call for a special session.

"I stand by our bill. It is germane to the call – legal precedent is clear on this point," Patrick said in his tweet. "Something Governor Abbott and Speaker Phelan should remember -- for any bill to pass, it must go through both the House AND the Senate."
