The actor's dad, Eugene Levy, starred as the father of Jason Biggs' naive teen protagonist in the raunchy 1999 comedy

Dan Levy has a message for American Pie fans: It's not about him!

Despite his dad Eugene Levy starring as the father of Jason Biggs' teen protagonist in the raunchy 1999 comedy, the Good Grief director, writer and star is setting the record straight that filmmakers did not pull from Eugene's experience in parenting his real-life son.

"For most of my high-school life, people thought the movie was, like, a biography of my life," Dan, 40, said on Friday's episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show. "Which is really unfortunate, because I would've killed to have had a life that interesting."

"There were no pies — I don't even know about the ingredients of an apple pie, but that's a whole other conversation," he joked.

American Pie is a coming-of-age comedy about a group of awkward high-school students who make a pact to lose their virginity before graduation.

Aside from Eugene and Biggs, 45, the film stars Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Natasha Lyonne, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Seann William Scott, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Shannon Elizabeth and Jennifer Coolidge.

In his interview with Kelly Clarkson, Dan said he was supposed to attend the film's 1999 premiere alongside his dad (whom he would later costar with on Schitt's Creek) — but Dan's pal, who'd seen an advanced screening of American Pie, strongly advised him against it.

"[They said,] 'Run in the opposite direction of wherever your parents are in relation to that film,' " the Happiest Season star recalled. "And I did. And I have yet to see it with them."

Dan, who did end up seeing American Pie later, also quipped later in the interview, to raucous laughter from both the audience and Clarkson, 41, "It's a weird thing to grow up watching your dad just hand out porn to some other kid."

In reality, Biggs has joked in the somewhat recent past that he's "a little jealous" Dan gets to have Eugene, 77, as his real-life parent.

"I know he’s not my real dad, he’s YOUR real dad, but still ... I can’t help but be a little jealous?" Biggs commented on a December 2020 Instagram post of Dan's, in which he shared snapshots from the "dapper" photo shoot he and his dad for Entertainment Weekly's  2020 Entertainers of the Year.

"Good thing you two are the best comedy/fashion/father-son pairing and deserve every accolade you’re getting. Makes it easier to stomach," Biggs added.

"Love you guys. And love this," added the actor, who played Eugene's onscreen son in the American Pie movies starting with the 1999 original and ending with 2012's American Reunion.

Good Grief is now streaming on Netflix.
