Comedy Central Releases ‘Awkwafina is Nora From Queens’ Season 2 Trailer (TV News Roundup)

Comedy Central released a trailer for Season 2 of “Awkwafina is Nora From Queens,” premiering on Aug. 18.

Starring Awkwafina, Bowen Yang, BD Wong and Lori Tan Chinn, the new season follows Nora (Awkwafina) as she navigates young adulthood in outer-borough New York City.

In the trailer, Nora gives advice to her cousin (Yang), works at a CBD store and falls asleep at the wheel.

Gabo Augustine, Michelle Buteau, Jennifer Esposito, Chrissie Fit, Jonathan ‘Dumbfoundead’ Park, Jaboukie Young White, Wai Ching Ho, Bea Soong, Nancy Eng, Liang Ying He and Fay Ann Lee reprise their roles from Season 1.

Food Network has announced that “Raid the Fridge,” a new competition series hosted by actor, comedian and podcaster Dan Ahdoot, will premiere on Sept. 1 at 10 p.m. In each episode, four professional chefs will be presented with differently decorated refrigerators and must pick one before opening it and cooking with the ingredients inside. Items like photos and calendars will clue competitors into what kind of person may own each fridge, but those appearances may sometimes lead them astray. After three rounds of cooking challenges, judges Jordan Andino and Jamika Pessoa will choose a winner to receive $10,000. “Raid the Fridge” is produced by Critical Content.

Hulu announced a special animated episode of “Pen15,” premiering on Aug. 27. In the episode, titled “Jacuzzi,” Anna (Anna Konkle) and Maya (Maya Erskine) are introduced to new crippling insecurities while on vacation with Curtis (Taylor Nichols). They try to ignore them, but a mystical turn makes their self-doubt impossible to forget. “Jacuzzi” is written and directed by Konkle. “Pen15” is created, written and executive produced by Konkle, Erskine and Sam Zvibleman. Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone and Becky Sloviter of The Lonely Island; Marc Provissiero and Brooke Pobjoy from Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment; and Debbie Liebling also serve as executive producers.

CASTING

Phillipa Soo has joined the cast of Apple TV Plus’ “Shining Girls,” a metaphysical thriller based on the 2013 novel by Lauren Beukes. Starring as the intelligent and sure-footed Jin-Sook, who does research at the Adler planetarium, Soo joins previously announced cast members Elisabeth Moss, Wagner Moura and Jamie Bell. “Shining Girls” hails from MRC Television. Moss directs two episodes and executive produces through Love & Squalor Pictures alongside Lindsey McManus. Leonardo DiCaprio serves as executive producer through Appian Way alongside Jennifer Davisson and Michael Hampton, and Beukes and Alan Page Arriaga also executive produce. Silka Luisa is the showrunner.

Damon Wayans Jr. will host Peacock’s “Frogger,” a competition series based on the iconic 1980s video game. Co-hosted by “Good Morning Football’s” Kyle Brandt, the series supersizes the concept of the Konami game into an epic obstacle course filled with all the same elements. The winner of the 13-episode series will hop away with $100,000. Based on the Konami-owned IP, “Frogger” is produced by Eureka Productions in partnership with Konami Cross Media NY, Inc. Executive producers include Chris Culvenor and Paul Franklin for Eureka Productions, Eden Gaha and Fred Birckhead. The show format was created by Culvenor.

DEALS

Gaming network G4 announced a new media rights deal with ESL Gaming, the world’s biggest esports company. For the first time, the U.S. and Canada esports community can access ESL Pro Tour events via linear TV in primetime slots. The partnership will allow G4 and ESL Gaming to spotlight esports and gaming entertainment for a brand new audience. G4 holds exclusivity to produce and air the programs in the region.

ACQUISITIONS

FilmRise has acquired the distribution rights to Jetmir Media’s court TV series “The Mediator with Ice-T.” FilmRise will represent the show in all media worldwide, and Jetmir will retain U.S. broadcast syndication rights. Both companies are also co-financing 20 new episodes of the series, which follows the Grammy-award winning rapper Ice-T as he seeks resolutions between two feuding civilian parties.

LATE NIGHT

Kate Beckinsale, Fred Armisen and Leon Bridges will appear on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” while Christian Slater, Chase Stokes and KEM will be on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” with guest host Anthony Anderson. “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” will have on Hannah Einbinder and Alex Falcone, and Mindy Kaling, Taku Hirano, Jack Antonoff and his band Bleachers will be on “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”
