Damian Lillard has filed for divorce from his wife, Kay’la Hanson.

According to the Willamette Week, the filing occurred on Monday (Oct. 2) in Clackamas County Circuit Court. Legal documents cite “irreconcilable differences” between the pair, which “caused the irremediable breakdown of their marriage.” Additionally, the filing states that Kay’La moved into a separate West Linn home. The former Portland Trail Blazer remained at their once-shared locale until he moved to Tualatin, OR.

The NBA star’s attorney provided a statement to the WW asking the public for the pair’s privacy. “Damian and his family ask that their privacy be respected during this sensitive time and presently have no further comment,” attorney Shawn Menashe said.

Damian and Kay’la met while attending Utah’s Weber State University from 2008-2012. Lillard proposed to his wife-to-be during the 2020 NBA All-Star game in Chicago and married in September 2021. In a 2021 Ebony interview, Dame spoke about his wife holding him down throughout college.

“She had the car, an apartment and bent over backwards for me. Kay’La accepted me with all my flaws as a young man,” he admitted. The same interview found the athlete detailing how he managed to surprise her with a proposal. “I told her we were attending a new Valentine’s Day event the NBA was hosting. We showed up to the venue where I had a wall full of roses designed with ‘Will You Marry Me?'” he added. During their relationship, the pair had three kids.

The news arrives a week after Dame became a Milwaukee Buck. On Wednesday (Sept. 27), Lillard, 33, was traded to the Bucks in a three-way deal. The blockbuster move involved the Bucks, Blazers, and the Phoenix Suns. Portland swapped Dame for Jrue Holiday, DeAndre Ayton, Toumani Camara, and an “unprotected” 2029 first-round pick. The Western Conference Northwest Division team also received swap rights for 2028 and 2030.

However, Holiday will not stay with the Blazers, as the team reportedly intends to deal him to another team soon. Meanwhile, Phoenix received Jusuf Nurkic, Grayson Allen, Nassir Little, and Keon Johnson.
