Dame Helen Mirren Has Spoken on Movie Streaming: 'I Love Netflix, But F— Netflix!'

Helen Mirren Says 'F Netflix,' Watch Movies in Theaters

The Queen has spoken.

Helen Mirren appeared onstage at CinemaCon Tuesday where she chimed in on the ongoing debate between directors wanting their movies seen in theaters and streaming sites like Netflix getting in on the game.

“I love Netflix, but f— Netflix!” Mirren said while the crowd cheered, according to Variety. “There is nothing like sitting in the cinema.”

The debate picked up steam this year after Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma tied for the most nominations at the 2019 Oscars. Roma was distributed by Netflix and qualified for nominations after a limited and selective theatrical release before it hit wide on the streaming site.

Current Academy rules dictate that movies be screened for at least a week in Los Angeles during the year of eligibility in order to qualify for the awards.

Iconic director Steven Spielberg has been leading the fight against Netflix since last year, when he agreed with the Cannes Film Festival banning streaming movies from competing for its top prize.

He went further earlier this year after Roma picked up three Oscars by announcing that he would petition the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to change the rule and require four weeks of exclusive theatrical release.

“Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie,” he told ITV News in March 2018. “You certainly, if it’s a good show, deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar. I don’t believe films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theaters for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination.”
