Police have arrested a man after a pedestrian was left fighting for her life when a cyclist collided with her in a suspected hit-and-run.

The ‘shocking incident’ during Tuesday’s evening rush hour saw a woman struck by a cyclist riding an electric-assisted bike as she tried to cross Kingsland High Street in Dalston, east London.

Scotland Yard said the suspect had been arrested at an address in Islington, north London, after he contacted police late on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old was held on suspicion of causing bodily harm under Section 35 of the Offence Against Person Act, which covers incidents ‘injuring persons by furious driving’.

He was also arrested on suspicion of failing to stop and failing to report a collision.

The woman, 56, remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officers are continuing to appeal for information over the incident that took place shortly after 5pm.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: ‘The pedestrian, a 56-year-old woman, collided with the cyclist who was riding an electric-assisted pedal cycle, as she attempted to cross the road.

‘Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance.
