Police identify 2 suspects in murder of Andre Emmett last month
Two men accused of killing former Texas Tech and NBA player Andre Emmett were identified by Dallas police on Monday, the Dallas Morning News reported.
Keith Landon Johnson, 32, was booked on outstanding warrants Friday night at the Dallas County jail. A capital murder charge was added Saturday, as first reported by WFAA-TV on Sunday night. Police confirmed at the time it was “in relation” to the death of Emmett.
He remains in custody with bail set at more than $500,00, the Morning News reported.
Another capital murder arrest warrant is out for 29-year-old Michael Lucky in Emmett’s death, per the Morning News.
Police said there were two suspects after Emmett, 37, was shot and killed in his hometown of Dallas on Sept. 23. The department released surveillance video and asked for the public’s assistance. Kent Hance, the former chancellor at Emmett’s alma mater Texas Tech, raised money for a Crimestoppers reward of $50,000, according to WFAA-TV.
Emmett was in a Land Rover when he was approached by two people at approximately 2:15 a.m., police said. The video shows a man walking up to Emmett pointing a handgun and someone yelling “don’t move.”
Shortly afterward, Emmett is seen running down the street across the camera screen. The man follows, points his gun and shoots before the two suspects take off in a Chrysler 300. A passerby found Emmett and called 911. He died at the hospital.
Emmett is Texas Tech’s all-time leading scorer with 2,256 points from 2001-04. He’s a member of the school’s hall of fame and ring of honor, which he accepted this year. The player spent most of his professional career overseas with the exception of two seasons in the NBA. Last year he became a star stateside again in the BIG3 and recently started a foundation that helps youth with resources to thrive in life.
