Dallas Cowboys tailgate at Speaking Rock, Caifanes among things to do in El Paso

Mexican rock band Caifanes will perform this weekend in El Paso. The group first got U.S. airplay when they released their single, "La Negra Tomasa," in 1988.

Caifanes to perform at Plaza Theatre

Mexican alternative rock group Caifanes will bring its 2023 Tour to El Paso with a performance at 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Plaza Theatre. Limited tickets are available, ranging from $89 to $149, plus fees, available at Ticketmaster.com.

Magoffin Home State Historic site offers free yoga, crocheting class

The Magoffin Home State Historic will have a free Yoga class from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1120 Magoffin Ave. This will be a vinyasa-style class to center the body and mind for the day. Attendees should bring their mats. Reservations are required. Information: 915-533-5147 Ext. 1002 or email magoffin-home@thc.texas.gov.

The Magoffin Home also will have a new program, Crochet Club, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9. Attendees can bring their supplies or use the ones available at the home, and staff will provide instruction, space and inspiration. Get some laughs at Comic Strip this weekend

Funny man, California comic Manny Maldonado will be at the Comic Strip this weekend, with shows at 8 p.m. Friday, 7:30 and 10 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $15 and $25, available online or at the venue.

Femme Frontera Film Showcase will be Sept. 7-9

The 8th Annual Femme Frontera Film Showcase, featuring works by women and non-binary filmmakers from border regions, will kick off Thursday and continue through Saturday at the Plaza Theatre and other venues. The schedule of films is at https://www.femmefrontera.org/2023-fffs. Tickets for the films on Friday are $12, excluding fees, and available via Ticketmaster.com.

Speaking Rock Dallas Cowboys tailgate party

Speaking Rock Entertainment Center will have its first Dallas Cowboys Tailgate Party of the season with a chili cook-off competition, starting at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at 122 S. Old Pueblo Road. Twenty contestants will be cooking for a grand prize of a round trip to the Dallas Cowboys home game or $5,000. Kick-off for the game starts at 6:25 p.m.

Attendees can vote for their favorite chili at each contestant's voting box. Voting and taste testing will continue up until the third quarter. Winners will be announced, and awards will be presented at the end of the game. Cash only at bar and outside food stations.

Coming up: 9/11 Memorial Ceremony

The city's El Paso Fire Department will have its 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11 at Fire Department Station 18, 7901 San Jose Rd. The ceremony is in commemoration of those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Twenty-two years ago, four planes were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, the Pentagon, and one crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Two thousand nine hundred and seventy-seven people lost their lives that day, among them 343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers.

It was also the single deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the United States.
