Dalgliesh exhibit opens with reception Thursday at ArtWise Gallery

Jan. 10—GRAND FORKS — An opening reception for Sheila Dalgliesh's art exhibit will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, in the ArtWise Gallery and Creative Space in the Columbia Mall center court.

The exhibit, titled "Meander," will be shown through Feb. 24. It will be open Tuesdays-Fridays from 1 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from noon-4 p.m.

This exhibit will feature chalk pastel paintings, which has been her main focus in recent years, Dalgliesh said. It will also include some mixed media paintings.

The Grand Forks artist is also the first employee of the proposed children's museum, which is planned for the city's south side.

As a member of the team working to bring the children's museum, the Center for Exploration, to Grand Forks, Dalgliesh has been serving as director of operations full time since Sept. 13. Her duties include community engagement activities and events.

Dalgliesh's background includes working with ArtWise, the North Dakota Museum of Art and Grand Forks Public Schools.

In her role with the children's museum, "I am glad to have a home again and work with kids," she said. "That's what I live for."

Dalgliesh grew up in Cavalier County, Cando and Devils Lake, North Dakota, and is a graduate of Devils Lake High School. She has lived in Grand Forks all her adult life.

Her rural roots and love for winter experiences have sparked inspiration for her artwork "as she sketches in her snowshoes in search of beaver dams," according to a news release about the exhibit opening.

"Winter is my favorite season," said Dalgliesh, who often captures outdoor scenes, such as landscapes, fence posts and fences, on her canvases.

"There is no linear progression; my progress is meandering," she said in the release. "I like finding and observing beauty where others see none. The weeds, the wild cucumber plants strung beautifully from the trees, the cockleburs in my socks are part of the landscape I try to capture in my drawings and paintings.

"Lately, I have been enjoying the ease of using chalk pastels. I find the pastels allow me to capture the joy of what is my home."
