Dale Moss opened up about his true intentions for joining The Bachelorette this week.

As it turns out, Moss says he would not have ended up on season 16 if his now-fiancée Clare Crawley wasn't the Bachelorette.

On a new episode of the podcast Raising the Bar with Alli and Adrian, Moss, 32, revealed that, after being nominated for the show, he wasn't convinced to accept his spot until Crawley, 39, had been announced as the Bachelorette.

"Now, I could have never planned what happened because I was nominated," the former NFL player said. "I never actually signed up. And I turned it down over, and over, and over again. And I actually finally committed to it four days before everyone was supposed to leave for the show. And the only reason I committed to it was because Clare was announced as Bachelorette at that time."

Moss said that after he saw Crawley's announcement on Good Morning America, he felt like he needed to meet her.

"She was so confident and passionate about it," he added of her morning show appearance. "And I know that she had been through this before, but I felt by watching her that this was her time and she was exactly where she was meant to be."

Crawley and Moss made their exit from season 16 of The Bachelorette just a few weeks into filming following a quick engagement, leaving the door open for Tayshia Adams to take over as the Bachelorette.

The couple open up about their engagement, their first impressions of each other and why Tayshia says Zac is all she's ever wanted and more.

From the first night of Crawley's season of The Bachelorette, viewers saw an instant spark between Crawley and Moss, a sports consultant from New York. After attempting to get to know the other men, she ultimately decided she wanted to cut the experience short to be with Moss and accepted his proposal during episode four.

"This is the happiest time in my life," Crawley told PEOPLE. "Everything [since] has been even more reaffirming of why I chose him."

Based on Moss' sentiments this week, it seems he shared Crawley's feelings from day one.

"I thought, 'You know what? I trust really opening it up and I trust that you'll give me your true self, and whatever I have to give or whatever I lay down, it'll be received,'" he says on the podcast. "And I think just even with that, from that little interaction, I just believe that we already had something at that moment. And that's really what compelled me to kind of go on the show in the first place."

Crawley and Moss recently spoke to PEOPLE about the naysayers who criticized the fact that they got engaged after two weeks.

"For me personally, there is no explanation needed," Moss said. "I've never been afraid of commitment. And when I met Clare, I knew I was all in. She lights a fire in me that I was missing for so long."

Crawley added: "It may be fast for some people, and that's okay. But for us, it's working."
