Dale Earnhardt Jr. Says He Got His First Speeding Ticket from the Same Police Officers as His Dad

The NASCAR legend opened up on "The Kelly Clarkson Show" about his past moving violations

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is taking a drive down memory lane!

While on The Kelly Clarkson Show Tuesday, the NASCAR driver looked back in the rearview to reflect on his very first speeding ticket — which had a hilarious connection to his father, the late, legendary racer Dale Earnhardt Sr.

“I had a few issues in the first two years of having my license, from 16 to 18,” Earnhardt Jr., 49, told Clarkson while promoting the new Netflix docuseries NASCAR: Full Speed. “I got four tickets, and the funny thing about it is, is that it was four different officers that told me they all gave my dad his first ticket, so I don’t know how that is possible.”

Despite the moving violations, the younger Earnhardt said he used the incidents as a teaching moment.

“I learned my lesson,” he said. “I haven’t had any problems since then.”

In his latest project, Earnhardt Jr. serves as executive producer of the docuseries.

Chronicling the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs and championship race, Full Speed's first five episodes follow drivers as they vie for one of the most coveted titles in U.S. motorsports. Among those featured on-screen are Ryan Blaney, William Byron, Ross Chastain, Denny Hamlin, Bubba Wallace, Kyle Larson, Christopher Bell, Joey Logano and Tyler Reddick.

Earnhardt Jr. spoke with PEOPLE about the project last month.

”The intensity of the elimination format in the NASCAR playoffs is unlike anything else in motorsports,” the NASCAR Hall of Famer told PEOPLE.

He added, ”NASCAR: Full Speed provides an incredible opportunity for folks to learn more about how this sport works, who these drivers are as people and competitors, and what makes them the best in the world at what they do.”

NASCAR: Full Speed debuted Jan. 30 on Netflix.
