Dakota Johnson's new movie has unique connections to her viral talk show moment.

Max debuted the trailer for Johnson's new movie Am I Ok? on May 20. Entertainment Weekly noted that Johnson's collaboration with the film's director Tig Notaro happened in part because of her infamous 2019 appearance on the The Ellen DeGeneres Show, when she questioned host Ellen DeGeneres over an invite to her birthday party.

During Johnson's November 2019 appearance on DeGeneres' show, she noted that Notaro, 53, attended and performed at her 30th birthday party minutes after the actress and DeGeneres traded playful barbs regarding whether she had sent DeGeneres an invite.

Johnson named Notaro as her "favorite comedian" during the appearance — and it turns out Notaro's performance at Johnson's birthday led to a friendship between the two that ultimately brought about Johnson's starring role in Am I Ok?

Additionally, Am I Ok? screenwriter Lauren Pomerantz worked for The Ellen DeGeneres Show as a writer at the time. She was on the set for the viral Johnson moment. The film is based on Pomerantz's real-life experience coming out as gay in her 30s.

"She was fantastic, and I'm just incredibly grateful that she did it," the screenwriter told EW of Johnson's performance. "She captured everything I could ever have hoped for in that character — the confusion, the insecurity, all of the inner turmoil I think really came out."
