'Madame Web' introduces Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a New York City paramedic who gains the ability to see a future full of spider-powered characters

Dakota Johnson has been here before.

On Wednesday, Sony Pictures released the first trailer for its upcoming superhero movie Madame Web, which stars Johnson, 34, as a New York City paramedic named Cassandra Webb who begins seeing the future — and holds a startling personal connection to a mysterious company of Spider-Man-related characters.

The trailer, set to Billie Eilish's hit song "bury a friend," meets Cassandra as she attempts to protect a trio of teenagers (including Sydney Sweeney) from a masked villain who looks suspiciously like Spider-Man. When the villain stabs Cassandra with a knife, she is brought back to the beginning of the encounter.

Cassandra then recounts her life as a paramedic in Manhattan alongside a colleague played by Adam Scott. After a near-death experience on the job, Cassandra confesses to a doctor that she's experiencing visions of the future and begins to encounter both Sweeney's trio of friends and the man trying to kill them, whom she identifies as Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim).

The teenagers and Cassandra all realize they are connected to each other and that Ezekiel can see the future himself, as they try to prevent him from destroying a future in which the teens also seem to grow into spider-related super powers.

An official synopsis for the movie implies Madame Web takes place in yet another new universe, separate from Sony's Venom movies, its 2022 supervillain film Morbius and its role in the Tom Holland-led Spider-Man series.

The movie, cowritten and directed by longtime television writer SJ Clarkson, also stars Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps and Emma Roberts, whose character is noticeably absent from the trailer.

It was announced that Sweeney and Johnson would costar in the movie back in March 2022. Johnson was previously seen filming scenes in a paramedic uniform in Boston during an August 2022 shoot for the movie.

Madame Web releases in theaters Feb. 14, 2024.
