Dakota Johnson Remembers Being Totally Bored at the Oscars as a Kid

You’d think the chance to attend the Academy Awards would be a dream come true no matter your age. But Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson’s experience going with her mother, Melanie Griffith, and step-father, Antonio Banderas, in 2000 when she was 10 years old wasn’t exactly a Cinderella story.

"Yikes," she told us as she recalled the long lavender dress and chunky white patent leather shoes she wore that night. "[The show] was so long. I was like, ‘God, I’m tired, this is going on forever, I don’t who any of these people are. Why is this person talking?’"

Who can blame her? The telecast in 2000, hosted by Billy Crystal, ran a whopping four hours and four minutes.

Still, Johnson had her Cinderella moment earlier that evening.

"That was really fun for me," she said. "The getting ready part was always fun. Even if my mom was getting her hair and makeup done and I wasn’t going with her, I would still mess around with the hair and makeup."

Johnson also got another chance to break out her Oscar gown for a less high-profile school function. “I was ridiculously overdressed, per usual,” she said. “I had some really intense wardrobe moments as a child.”
